In the country of the last things

Hi everybody!

While I was reading and answering Lorena´s ideas about "In the country of the last things", I started thinking on the many things Paul Auster deals with in his book. From what I could understand from the reading, he attempts to describe several aspects of life and the way we cope with them.

One of these points is "the search for something". For example, the main character of the story is looking for her brother. That is the reason why she decides to leave her own country… Continue

20 th century Hits volume one and two

Hi! I went to musimundo to buy some cds and books as a prize for having finished my practicas. I found the 20th century hits trilogy volumme one and two very interesting because you have the history of the music together in six cds. It's useful to teach past simple and passive voice in a funny way. Apart from that you can coordinate activities with the music teacher or with the history teacher as well

In the country of the last things

Hi again. I read till page 172. It is really interesting how the author describe the relationship between Anna and Victoria. How they show us that in difficult times a person is able to fall in love with someone of the same gender or with someone of different gender: People can be heterosexual and homosexual as well. In the case of Anna and Victoria, I think their relationship it is not a question of love and sex only. It is about to give each other the encourage to live the present… Continue

In the coutry of the last things

Hi again! I read until page 173. In these pages is shown how people change because of extreme situations. For example, Victoria fells in love with Anna. They are together for few months. I think for both of them it is not only a question of love and sex because both of them have things in common. They lose their relatives, families and friends.Being together it was a question of giving each other the courage to live in difficult times and face loneliness. It reinforces the idea that in times of… Continue

In the country of the last things

HI! I see that you are very interested in things such us masturbation. It has to do with our most private pleasures. Apart from that, people in times of war have sex everywhere even in front of the others. I think the question of Anna's maturbation and its description has to do with extreme situations and it is related to the way she finds to relax for a while.

I read untill page 151 and I think there are other topics that has to be considered. For example, as you said in your previous… Continue

Absent Friends

Coming back to the play, I have to confess that I feel amazingly surprised to have discovered that Paul & Diana's relationship could be compared to the napkin Paul had stolen from his mother- in - law when he was a young lad. At the very beginning it was as white as sheet, it has grown torn and dirtier as the time passed and now it is just a piece of cloth, nothing more nothing less. Do you agree with me?

World Philosophy Day 2009

The world's population really needs the skills (literacy!) to balance arguments and debate issues. Today being World Philosophy Day, 19 November 2009 we can see this need as global events re-frame our words. For decades now some of the world's cities - capitals have become synonymous with fevered political debate, equality, equity, poverty, power.... 'Copenhagen' is the… Continue

The WWW, spam, personality - mood and idealism

According to Technology Guardian 19.11.2009 Cisco estimated late last year that there are around 200bn junk e-mails a day. The (newspaper) article Mixed Messages states that although filters intercept a vast amount of spam, it remains the route for malware and viruses now disguised as 'friend' invites. What is the impact of that ever growing volume… Continue

Nurses as modellers and informaticians: surely not!

Nursing is still trying to escape and evade the sexual 'Carry On' stereotypes that have plagued the profession in the popular imagination. For the majority of people talk of nursing and models more readily conjures up visions of catwalks than an academic pursuit.

You can still see and hear the response of bright-eyed girls and boys (aged 9-10...) to the age-old question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The answer: "I want to be a nurse and help people get better!" Even… Continue

In the country of the last things

This book is really interesting. Most of the topics written by Paul Auster about the end of the world we live in were predicted in the Bible and by Nostradamus. In addition to this, this book inspired many movies that deal with the same topic. I would like to reflect about this question: Are the things described by the author going to happen in the near future? Can we do something to protect our world? I think that some facts that the author says are happening nowadays. People die in the… Continue

ABSENT FRIENDS

I think that every characters are absent friends. Each of them has his own conflict and things to hide under the carpet.

If I compare Collins with the rest of the friends, I can say that Collins is in the best position. He lost his girlfriend but he finds his comfort remembering the past.

Collin is not aware of the pain of his friends because he has been living in another place for many years. He can not understan the situation. Apart from that, Collin's friend don't want to share the… Continue

I have to contradict myself

You know that I haven't finished In The Country Of The Last Things yet. And yesterday, when I reached page 62, I found Anna not as Anna, but as Paul Auster. I have to contradict myself when I thought that the writer had to have studied the femenine points of view very well. Well, I think that he failed in the part of the masturbation. I think he let the masculine wishes flow naturally.
The act of masturbation belongs to both women and men, but isn't is a very masculine way to confess?

Recipe for Relaxing over Thanksgiving Holiday.... or any holiday.

Stress. It’s killing you, right? Paperwork is due; the kids have the sniffles (Is it H1N1? Gasp!); your co-worker is the devil’s liege; there’s a student you can’t seem to reach… I really could write an entire blog about the different situations that cause us stress, but that would take all day, and I’d have to double up on the Prozac for that one.

The question is… how do we reduce stress and find a way to chill out over the Thanksgiving holiday?

(A few more notes on… Continue
