Mobile Literacy: Learning outside the classroom through audiobooks on personal devices.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Many of our students have their own mobile devices with them wherever they go. How can we encourage the use of these devices to improve literacy skills outside the classroom? One way is the use of downloadable audiobooks. We are told in many educational journal articles that listening to audiobooks is beneficial, but there is actually very little research about what students gain from listening to audiobooks in their free time. Who should be promoting student access to downloadable audiobooks? What challenges are there to providing them through the school library? Audiobooks have been around a long time but the prevalence of downloadable files, personal devices and improved publishing standards are making this technology potentially more appealing than ever for our students.
This workshop will present action research currently being conducted for my Doctoral dissertation through the University of New England (Australia). My research presents the perspectives of pre-adolescent students who are fluent readers and writers of English and who have chosen to listen to audiobooks in their spare time. What literacy benefits have these students found through extensive listening to audiobooks?
It is my hope that we can develop a network of educators who are interested in promoting downloadable audiobooks to our students, and to conduct similar action research to learn more about the challenges and benefits of encouraging students to listen to literature.
